João Pedro inspires Chelsea comeback in five-goal Napoli thriller
Chelsea produced a memorable European comeback to beat Napoli 3–2 at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona, with João Pedro’s brilliant second-half double completing a dramatic turnaround in Naples. Enzo Fernández gave the visitors an early lead from the penalty spot, but goals from Antonio Vergara and Rasmus Højlund sent Napoli into the interval ahead. Chelsea responded after the break, as João Pedro struck twice to secure all three points and a top-eight finish in the Champions League league phase.
The Blues began confidently and took control of possession during the opening stages. Their pressure was rewarded in the 19th minute when Reece James’ free-kick struck the arm of Juan Jesus inside the penalty area. Enzo Fernández stepped forward and placed the resulting spot kick into the bottom left corner.
Napoli found an equaliser in the 33rd minute through Vergara. The midfielder collected Mathías Olivera’s pass, escaped Moisés Caicedo’s challenge and turned past Wesley Fofana before guiding a composed finish beyond Robert Sánchez.
The hosts completed the turnaround shortly before half-time. Olivera made a powerful run down the left and delivered a low ball into the penalty area, where Højlund arrived to finish via the post.
Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior reacted at the break by introducing Cole Palmer for Pedro Neto. Further changes followed before the hour mark, with Trevoh Chalobah and Jamie Gittens entering as Chelsea searched for a route back into the match.
The substitutions quickly changed the contest.
In the 61st minute, Palmer found João Pedro outside the Napoli penalty area. The Brazilian turned away from pressure, shifted the ball onto his left foot and unleashed a powerful long-range strike beyond goalkeeper Alex Meret.
With eight minutes remaining, Chelsea regained possession inside their own half and launched a rapid attack. João Pedro exchanged passes with Palmer before racing through the centre of the pitch. Palmer returned the ball perfectly into his path, allowing the forward to advance into the penalty area and fire a controlled finish across Meret.
Napoli introduced former Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku as they searched for a late equaliser. Lukaku was presented with an opportunity from close range, but Sánchez made an important save to preserve Chelsea’s advantage.
The final whistle confirmed an impressive comeback victory for the visitors. Chelsea finished sixth in the league-phase standings with 16 points, securing direct passage into the round of 16 and avoiding the knockout play-offs.
Napoli, meanwhile, finished outside the qualification places and were eliminated from the competition.
