Match Report: Portugal 2 – 1 Croatia | FIFA World Cup 2026

Ramos heads Portugal past Croatia in stoppage time

Portugal advanced to the World Cup round of 16 after recovering from a goal down to defeat Croatia 2–1 at Toronto Stadium.

Portugal controlled possession during the opening half but struggled to convert their territorial advantage into clear opportunities. Cristiano Ronaldo narrowly failed to connect with Pedro Neto’s early cross, while Bruno Fernandes was unable to capitalise on another dangerous delivery.

Croatia emerged with greater intent after the interval and took the lead in the 53rd minute. Josip Stanišić found Ivan Perišić, who controlled the pass before calmly finishing into the far corner.

Portugal responded immediately, with Rafael Leão striking the crossbar before Ronaldo had a goal disallowed for offside.

The equaliser arrived in the 68th minute after Nikola Vlašić pulled Renato Veiga down inside the penalty area. Ronaldo drove the resulting penalty down the middle to score his first World Cup knockout-stage goal.

Substitute Gonçalo Ramos completed the comeback in the fourth minute of stoppage time, rising above the Croatian defence to head Rafael Leão’s cross beyond Dominik Livaković.

Croatia appeared to equalise with the final action of the match, but Joško Gvardiol’s goal was ruled out for offside following a VAR review.

Portugal progressed to face Spain in the round of 16, while Croatia were eliminated.
