Messi inspires late Argentina comeback to break England hearts
Argentina reached the World Cup final after two late goals completed a dramatic 2–1 comeback victory over England at Atlanta Stadium.
A tense first half produced few clear chances. Enzo Fernández’s early challenge on Elliot Anderson sparked pushing between both teams, while John Stones headed wide from Declan Rice’s free-kick for England’s first attempt.
Argentina began the second half with greater intent, as Julián Álvarez forced Jordan Pickford into a save at his near post. However, England struck first in the 55th minute when Morgan Rogers delivered a superb cross to the back post for Anthony Gordon to finish.
England then dropped deeper as Thomas Tuchel made defensive changes, allowing Argentina to dominate territory and possession.
Pickford kept England ahead in the 69th minute, diving to push away Nico González’s flicked header from Lionel Messi’s cross. Alexis Mac Allister then headed Rodrigo De Paul’s delivery against the post as Argentina increased the pressure.
The equaliser arrived in the 85th minute. Messi found Fernández outside the area, and the midfielder drove a superb strike beyond Pickford.
Argentina completed the turnaround in stoppage time when Messi crossed for substitute Lautaro Martínez to head home the winner.
Argentina progressed to face Spain in the final, while England were left to contest the third-place play-off against France.
