Rangers suffer penalty heartbreak in Soccer Sevens Shield final
Rangers concluded their 2026 HKFC Soccer Sevens campaign as Shield runners-up after an encouraging tournament from their Under-19 side.
The young Gers opened Group D with a 1–1 draw against Yau Yee League Select, with Zebedee Lawson scoring their equaliser.
Lawson then produced an outstanding individual display in the “Rangers derby” against BC Rangers, scoring four times as Rangers recorded an emphatic 5–1 victory.
A further goal from Lawson earned Rangers a 1–1 draw against Yokohama F. Marinos, allowing the Scottish side to finish second in the group with five points and progress to the Main Cup unbeaten.
Rangers faced eventual champions Brighton & Hove Albion in the quarter-finals, where goals from Joshua Robertson and Shane Nti condemned them to a 2–0 defeat and sent them into the Shield competition.
Aiden McCalion scored the only goal as Rangers defeated Larne in the Shield semi-final, setting up a meeting with West Ham United.
Lewis Stewart struck twice in a dramatic 2–2 final, but West Ham prevailed in the penalty shootout to deny Rangers the trophy.
Despite the disappointment, the tournament provided a positive conclusion to the season for a Rangers Under-19 squad that had recently been crowned CAS Elite League champions.
