Maseko sends South Africa into knockout stage for the first time
South Africa reached the World Cup knockout stage for the first time with a memorable 1–0 victory over South Korea at Estadio Monterrey.
South Korea controlled possession during the opening stages and came close when Kim Min-jae’s header was cleared off the line. However, South Africa created the better opportunities and repeatedly tested goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu.
Son Heung-min was introduced at half-time as South Korea searched for greater attacking threat, but South Africa took the lead in the 63rd minute. Thapelo Maseko completed a quick counterattack with a composed left-footed finish into the bottom corner.
South Korea applied late pressure, but goalkeeper Ronwen Williams produced an important stoppage-time save to secure a historic victory.
The result saw South Africa finish second in Group A and qualify for the Round of 32, where they will face Canada.
