Switzerland edge Canada to top Group B

Switzerland secured top spot in World Cup Group B with a 2–1 victory over co-hosts Canada at BC Place in Vancouver.

Following a tightly contested and goalless first half, Rubén Vargas gave Switzerland the lead just one minute after the restart.

Johan Manzambi doubled the advantage in the 57th minute with a powerful finish as the Swiss took control of the contest.

Substitute Promise David pulled a goal back for Canada in the 76th minute, setting up a tense conclusion. The hosts pushed forward in search of an equaliser, but Swiss goalkeeper Gregor Kobel made important late saves to preserve the victory.

The result sent Switzerland through as group winners, while Canada also secured their place in the Round of 32.
