Morocco eliminate Netherlands after penalty drama

Morocco advanced to the World Cup round of 16 after defeating the Netherlands 3–2 on penalties following a 1–1 draw at Estadio Monterrey.

Morocco enjoyed more possession and created several dangerous opportunities, but the Netherlands remained compact and threatened on the counterattack.

The Dutch took the lead in the 72nd minute when Crysencio Summerville released Cody Gakpo, who finished calmly to put Ronald Koeman’s side in control.

Morocco continued pushing forward and found their equaliser in the first minute of stoppage time. Chemsdine Talbi delivered a cross into the area for Issa Diop, whose powerful header forced extra time.

Neither side could find a winner during the additional 30 minutes, sending the contest to penalties.

Yassine Bounou saved Crysencio Summerville’s attempt, while Justin Kluivert and Quinten Timber also failed to score. Ismael Saibari converted Morocco’s decisive penalty to secure their place in the last 16.

Morocco will face co-hosts Canada, while the Netherlands were eliminated despite coming within minutes of qualification.
