Paraguay stun Germany in penalty shootout
Paraguay produced one of the biggest shocks of the World Cup by eliminating four-time champions Germany on penalties following a 1–1 draw at Boston Stadium.
Germany controlled possession throughout the opening half but struggled to create clear opportunities against Paraguay’s compact defence.
Paraguay punished their opponents in the 42nd minute when Julio Enciso headed home to give the South American side a surprise lead.
Germany responded nine minutes after the interval. Florian Wirtz delivered a cross into the area for Kai Havertz, whose header brought Julian Nagelsmann’s side level.
Jonathan Tah appeared to have scored Germany’s winner during extra time, but the goal was disallowed following a VAR review for a foul on goalkeeper Orlando Gill.
Gill then became Paraguay’s hero in the shootout, saving penalties from Havertz and Nick Woltemade. Tah also fired over before José Canale converted the decisive kick to complete a 4–3 victory.
Paraguay advanced to face either France or Sweden in the round of 16, while Germany suffered their first World Cup penalty-shootout defeat.
