Mexico end knockout drought with victory over Ecuador
Mexico advanced to the World Cup round of 16 with a commanding 2–0 victory over Ecuador at Mexico City Stadium.
The co-hosts made an energetic start after kick-off had been delayed by thunderstorms and opened the scoring in the 22nd minute. Roberto Alvarado released Julián Quiñones, who held off Willian Pacho before firing an excellent finish into the top corner.
Quiñones was involved again nine minutes later, exchanging passes with Raúl Jiménez before the striker powered a first-time effort beyond Hernán Galíndez to double Mexico’s advantage.
Ecuador nearly responded before half-time, but Raúl Rangel produced an impressive save to deny John Yeboah and preserve Mexico’s two-goal lead.
Ecuador controlled more possession after the interval but struggled to create clear opportunities against a disciplined Mexican defence. Piero Hincapié was dismissed during stoppage time as Ecuador’s frustration grew.
The victory was Mexico’s first in the knockout stage of a World Cup since defeating Bulgaria in 1986. Javier Aguirre’s side will face England in the round of 16, while Ecuador’s campaign ended in Mexico City.
