Match Report: Belgium 3 – 2 Senegal | FIFA World Cup 2026

Tielemans completes extraordinary Belgium comeback

Belgium advanced to the World Cup round of 16 after recovering from two goals down to defeat Senegal 3–2 after extra time at Seattle Stadium.

Senegal controlled much of the contest and took a deserved lead in the 25th minute. Ismaïla Sarr’s header struck the post before Habib Diarra converted the rebound from close range.

Sarr doubled the advantage six minutes after half-time, controlling Moussa Niakhaté’s long pass before holding off two defenders and firing beyond Thibaut Courtois.

Belgium appeared destined for elimination until substitute Romelu Lukaku turned Thomas Meunier’s low cross into the net in the 86th minute.

Captain Youri Tielemans then headed home three minutes later to complete a dramatic late recovery and force extra time.

The match appeared to be heading towards a penalty shootout before Lamine Camara was adjudged to have fouled Tielemans following a VAR review. The Belgian midfielder converted the resulting penalty in the 125th minute to seal an extraordinary victory.

Belgium will face the United States in the round of 16, while Senegal’s campaign ended despite an impressive performance.
