Ten-man USA end Bosnia’s World Cup campaign
The United States advanced to the World Cup round of 16 with a resilient 2–0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina at San Francisco Bay Area Stadium.
Bosnia defended with discipline during the opening stages, while the hosts saw several promising attacks break down. The breakthrough eventually arrived shortly before half-time when Folarin Balogun finished clinically to give the United States the lead.
The match changed in the 64th minute when Balogun was shown a red card, leaving the hosts to protect their advantage with ten men.
Bosnia pushed forward in search of an equaliser but struggled to create clear opportunities against a well-organised American defence.
Malik Tillman secured the victory in the 82nd minute, scoring directly from a superb free-kick to send the co-hosts through to a round-of-16 meeting with Belgium.
Bosnia’s first appearance in the World Cup knockout stage ended in defeat, while the United States recorded their first knockout victory at the tournament since 2002.
