Match Report: Brazil 2 – 1 Japan | FIFA World Cup 2026

Martinelli strikes late as Brazil survive Japan scare

Brazil recovered from a goal down to defeat Japan 2–1 in a dramatic World Cup round-of-32 contest at Houston Stadium.

Japan stunned the five-time champions in the 29th minute when Kaishu Sano intercepted Danilo’s misplaced pass, advanced towards goal and drove a powerful finish beyond Alisson.

Japan’s disciplined defensive structure frustrated Brazil throughout the remainder of the first half, despite Carlo Ancelotti’s side controlling possession.

Brazil returned with greater urgency after the interval and equalised in the 56th minute. Gabriel Magalhães delivered an inviting cross towards the far post, where Casemiro rose above his marker to head home.

Vinícius Júnior almost completed the turnaround moments later, but Zion Suzuki pushed his effort against the post following an excellent individual run.

Japan appeared to have done enough to force extra time until substitute Gabriel Martinelli struck in the fifth minute of stoppage time. Bruno Guimarães slipped a pass through the defence and Martinelli calmly finished at the far post.

Brazil advanced to face Norway in the round of 16, while Japan’s wait for a first World Cup knockout victory continued.
